Cologne Cathedral is located very close to Cologne Central Station and can be accessed on foot in less than 5 minutes. Therefore, when there is extra time during transit at Cologne Station for work-related travel, it is worth visiting the cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cathedral building was constructed about 800 years ago and the air and scenery surrounding the cathedral have their own unique history and atmosphere. It is a Catholic church with a long history, beginning construction in the 13th century and taking until the 19th century to complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, the most distinctive feature of Cologne Cathedral is its massive size. It has a height of 157m, a width of about 86m, and a floor space of about 7,000 square meters. The exterior is in the Gothic style, with windows and sculptures that are highly decorative and beautiful. Inside, there is a high ceiling and magnificent stained glass, as well as an impressive central altar that houses the Virgin Mary. During World War II, despite the surrounding areas being destroyed, the cathedral miraculously remained standing and was subsequently reconstructed. There is a camera shop located inside the cathedral building, and some photographs from immediately after the end of World War II are on display. Several of these photos show the cathedral looking almost unchanged amidst the rubble, and the contrast between the harshness of war and the overwhelming presence of the cathedral is striking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although I do not deeply understand its religious significance, it is always an overwhelming place that impresses me with its grandeur and power every time I visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
