Nagano City has a long history of development as the gate town of Zenkoji Temple.
Zenkoji Temple is said to have been founded 1,400 years ago, and its main hall and temple gate are historical structures built in the mid-Edo period.
Both wooden structures were built 300 years ago, and their size and majestic appearance are overwhelming.
Other highlights of the temple are the large sculptures, such as the Niomon statue of Niou.

There are many restaurants and souvenir shops around Zenkoji Temple, especially in the area called “Daimon” around the entrance to the approach to the temple.
Nagano is famous for its soba (buckwheat noodles), which are called “Shinshu soba” (buckwheat noodles). There are many buckwheat noodle shops in Daimon, including some that offer demonstrations of buckwheat noodle making.
There are also many elegant cafes and restaurants that retain the atmosphere of an old gate town and an inn town from the Edo period while incorporating modern design.
The townscape is an impressive mix of traditional Japanese architecture and modern, Western design.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
